Overview
Temporary Protected Status (TPS) is granted to eligible nationals of countries that the U.S. government has designated due to conditions such as armed conflict, natural disaster, or other extraordinary circumstances that make safe return temporarily unsafe. TPS provides protection from removal and eligibility for work authorization during the designated period.

TPS is not a path to permanent residence by itself, and it depends on a country-specific designation that the government can extend, redesignate, or terminate. Beneficiaries must register (or re-register) during the specified periods and meet continuous-presence and other eligibility requirements.
