Overview
The H-1B is a nonimmigrant visa that allows U.S. employers to hire foreign professionals in specialty occupations — positions that typically require at least a bachelor’s degree (or its equivalent) in a specific field. It is one of the most widely used work visas, common in technology, engineering, finance, healthcare, and many other professions.
Key requirements
The position must qualify as a specialty occupation, the worker must hold the required degree or equivalent, and the employer must file a Labor Condition Application (LCA) with the Department of Labor agreeing to pay the required wage and meet other conditions. Most new H-1B petitions are subject to an annual numerical cap and a registration/lottery selection process.
