B-1 STATUS

Overview

The B-1 visa is for temporary business visitors who come to the United States for legitimate business activities that do not involve gainful U.S. employment — such as attending meetings, negotiating contracts, consulting with business associates, or attending conferences.

What is and is not allowed

A B-1 visitor may engage in business activities on behalf of a foreign employer but generally may not perform productive local labor or receive a salary from a U.S. source. The visit must be temporary, and the visitor must maintain a residence abroad they do not intend to abandon.

How Do Law can help

We help travelers and companies determine whether the B-1 is the right category, prepare supporting documentation for the consulate or port of entry, and avoid common pitfalls that can lead to visa denials or findings of unauthorized work.
