Overview
Many family-based green cards are obtained through adjustment of status — the process by which an eligible relative already in the United States applies for permanent residence without leaving the country. This is one of the most common ways families reunite and build a future in the U.S.
Who may qualify
Immediate relatives of U.S. citizens (spouses, unmarried children under 21, and parents) generally have visas immediately available, which often makes them strong candidates for adjustment. Other family preference categories (such as certain relatives of citizens and lawful permanent residents) may also qualify when a visa number is available and other requirements are met, including lawful entry in most cases.
